Biosphere of the yApayaos

One of the country’s most forested provinces, Apayao is divided into two distinct regions: the Upper Apayao sports rugged terrain with towering peaks, plateaus and valleys, whereas the Lower Apayao features flatlands adorned with rolling hills and plateaus. Recognized for its ecological significance, Apayao serves as a refuge for critically endangered species like the Philippine eagle.

NaturalBiosphere Reserve

Covering the entire Province of Apayao, the Biosphere of the yApayaos includes both the peaks and valleys of Upper Apayao and the rolling hills and flatlands of Lower Apayao. The Apayao Lowland Forest Key Biodiversity Area houses critically endangered species such as the Philippine eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyi), while the Apayao River is a vital watershed with 18 tributaries across the province. Various ethnolinguistic groups make their home in Apayao, including ten Indigenous Cultural Communities. In particular, the Isneg community utilizes the Lapat, a customary management system to regulate resource use and protect the environment.
