The Puerto Galera Biosphere Reserve is located on the northern tip of Mindoro Island, bounded by Verde Island Passage, Camarong River, and the municipality San Teodoro. Its ecosystems include grasslands, dipterocarp and mossy forests, mangroves, coral reefs and coastal ecosystems, and agroforestry systems. Among its wide variety of species is the tamaraw (Bubalus mindorensis). Conserving its coral reefs is one of the biosphere reserve's main tasks due to healthy coral reefs being vital to biodiversity, traditional culture, tourism, education, and research.
